LILLIAN ADELL PARRISH GIBSON-KELSEY
Mrs. Lillian Adell Parrish Gibson-Kelsey age 90 of Kennard, passed away Sunday, February 7, 2010 in the Memorial Hospital in Lufkin. On Tuesday, July 8, 1919, twins Lillian Adell and Lilly Belle were born to Lizzie Emma Poole Parrish and James Newton Parrish. Lillian got her middle name from her father's birthplace in Adell, Georgia, her height from her mother, and her sparkling wit, brilliant mind, invariable kindness, and love of reading and gardening from both of them. She was a lively conversationalist who could entertain and amuse the youngest child, the sickest patient, or the most troubled individual. Her hobbies were reading, gardening and canning, playing with her dogs and fishing, attending the Ratcliff Sr. Citizen's Center, caring for her parents' old home place, and participating in many missions projects. For years, she went weekly with a group of friends and relatives to sing at the various nursing homes in Houston County. She loved to be outside, and considered a day to be wasted if she couldn't comfort, feed, or transport someone, chop down at least one tree, work in the yard, or use her tractor to fix the roads by her house. Mrs. Gibson-Kelsey was a remarkable woman who more than filled the roles of daughter, sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend. She was especially gifted in working with elderly or sick people and with little children in Vacation Bible School at First Baptist Church of Kennard. She was born a month after the passage of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution that granted women the right to vote, and in the true spirit of patriotism, she immediately began expressing intelligent and strongly held opinions. When the twins got old enough to go to high school, they stayed in town during the week, and the honors of Kennard High School valedictorian and salutatorian went to Lillian and Belle, respectively. Later honors included multiple prizes and terms as President of the Garden Club of Freeway Manor, Houston, and the Masonic Community Builder's Award in 2000. Although she grew up alongside her second husband, Joe Kelsey, and considered him to be her sweetheart, when he asked her to marry him, she had to decline. She felt that it was critical for her to go to Houston and get a good job in order to help her parents during the war. (As things happen, she and Joe didn't reconnect until 60 years later, when both were widowed. When they did meet again, they got married- right around the time of her 85th birthday in 2004.) Intent on supporting her parents, she did go to Houston as soon as she graduated from high school. There she got a job as a nanny for the disabled son of a wealthy family. She went with them to Coronado, CA, where she stayed until she felt a desperate homesickness for Deep East Texas and her own family. Once home, she recommitted to her goal of being more active in the war effort, so she went to Fort Polk, LA. There, she found the job of her dreams, running an airplane parts facility. In 1943, she met her future husband of 42 years, Robert H. (Bob) Gibson. Bob liked to joke that she had been his boss at work and at home, and she did a great job at both. They were married until his death in 1985, but she continued to be a loving and attentive daughter-in-law until her mother-in-law died at the age of 105. After the war, they and their two boys, Jesse and Johnnie, moved to Houston where she eventually took a long-term job in management at Sears. During her tenure in Houston, she invited two of her nieces to come live with them while they got their own starts in life. When she retired, she moved back to Stubblefield permanently, and began working the farm. She loved enthusiastically tending to sick friends and relatives, taking care of her dogs, and hospitably entertaining anyone who dropped by.
