FLOYD HAMILTON CAIN

Mr. Floyd Hamilton Cain, age 86, went home to be with his heavenly Father Tuesday, August 09, 2011. Mr. Cain was born on July 4, 1925, in the sawmill town of Camden, Texas, the son of hard-working and devout Christian parents. Mr. Cain was a member of First Baptist Church in Crockett and for the last three years resided at Houston County Nursing Home along with his high-school sweetheart and wife of 66 years, Falby (Foxworth) Cain. Mr. Cain's Bible scripture passage to live by comes from Joshua 24:15, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord " He was loving and respectful of those who did not hold his beliefs. He frequently ministered to others through extending a helping hand, as well as Biblical counseling. Being a staunch patriot, Mr. Cain enlisted in the Navy and served from 1942-1946 during WWII. While in the Navy, he boxed unprofessionally, thereby gaining the nickname "Killer Cain." Having qualified for the Navy SEALS, it was determined that he possessed unusually astute hearing and uncommon depth perception. He was appointed as lead SONAR operator on a minesweeper. During a WWII Veterans interview in 2004, he recounted the following story: I was there when our troops landed at Anzio where many of those first U.S. soldiers hitting the beach didn't make it. The scene was indescribable. Our minesweeper swept-up untold numbers of enemy mines making safe passage for ships carrying other soldiers. Our minesweeper was the lead ship also at St. Tropez, France, leading our soldiers right up to the beach. At the liberation of Rome, two friends and I were the first American Navy sailors to enter the Vatican City, which was a neutral zone. Decked out in our "dress whites” we must have been a welcome sight to the ravaged and war torn Italians. Another story close to his heart was emotionally difficult for Mr. Cain to tell: Hundreds of war orphans were gathered at various ports along the Mediterranean. They were displaced, starving, and needed shelter. Our boat's "Cookie " helped me gather food and building materials to feed the orphans and erect some sort of shelter. Our Captain would "look away " as I passed-by with supplies, as this type of aid was frowned upon by policy. When I think of those orphans, I can still see them waving to me as we sailed off. I often wonder about those children with no families, so young, and so alone, and about what their fates may have been. After his tour in WWII, Mr. Cain began a long and productive career at the Sinclair Refinery in Pasadena, Texas, where he and his wife raised their daughters. Working his way through the ranks at Sinclair, he retired having attained the honorable position of Turnaround Coordinator. He enjoyed officiating football, referring baseball, and repairing televisions at a shop in his garage. At some points in his life, he held the previous four jobs at a time, thus confirming a profound work ethic. When his five daughters were still living at home, he and his wife managed to do anything it took to take their daughters on many memorable vacations. An avid storyteller, Mr. Cain was also an incurable optimist, and possessed a generous playful nature. He was often overheard saying, "There is this little clown inside me just trying to get out." Other of his favorite activities included picking (the guitar) and singing, cooking, camping, vegetable gardening, swimming, traveling, and Scrabble. He often expressed his passionate wish that all of his family members would receive Christ as their personal Savior so that "the family circle would remain unbroken." Even after Mr. Cain was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, the disease was never able to rob him of his zeal for life, love of family, and an out-going friendly and positive personality. Loved ones know that Mr. Cain is now whole again and is in the presence of God holding to God's promise that they will one day be reunited with him in Heaven. Suvivors include his wife, Falby Cain; five daughters; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; brother Jim Cain, of Willis; countless extended family members; and many dear friends; daughters and their husbands Sharon and Don Maxwell, of Spring, Janet and Ray Sales, Gail Parker, all of Crockett, Joan and Luther Rogers, of Colmesneil and Jean and Ray Davis of Mt. Home, Ark. Preceded in death by his parents Bertrand and Ruby Cain; sister Laverne Stowe; brother Charles Cain; infant great-grandson Kyle Hosch; son-in-law Frank Parker; and nephew Gary Cain. Home going Services for Mr. Floyd Hamilton Cain were held at Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel in Crockett with the Reverend Charles Smith officiating, on Saturday, August 13, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery in Crockett. Pallbearers will be his grandsons Kenny Hosch, Spencer Hosch, Glen Maxwell, David Sales, Pat Bankey, Lee Bankey, and Dr. Randy Davis and Bo Dempsey. FERRELL DORA FELDER THOMAS

Mrs. Ferrell Dora Felder Thomas, age 86 of Crockett passed away of congestive heart failure on Thursday, July 14, 2011 in Houston at North Cypress Medical Center. Mrs. Thomas was born in Houston, Texas on November 8, 1924 to Henry Howard Felder and Desta A. Williams Felder. Her father was a choir director of various Assembly of God churches for most of his life, so naturally Ferrell’s secondary interest was singing. She had a strong alto voice and sang God's praises with various gospel quartets in the South Texas, Louisiana and Florida area. Mrs. Thomas and the love of her life, Will Thomas, loved the area around Houston County and her grandmother founded a church that exists still today in Grapeland: Felder's Chapel. She loved to sing, she loved to laugh, she loved to appreciate God's creation, she loved a good game (whether it was dominoes, cards, or even football). But the primary passion and driving force of her life was to be a servant and coworker in the ministry of Jesus Christ. He was the Rock on which she built her life and what a strong foundation He has been. She was active in the “fields of harvest in the Kingdom of God on earth” until her days were completed, fittingly, for at least the past decade, here at Harvest Church in Crockett. She lived her life in accordance with her faith and her faith was Strong as was her love for People. She was known variously as "Sister Ferrell," "Miss Ferrell," "Miss Thomas", "Grandma Ferrell," "Mom," just plain "Ferrell," and by other terms of endearment. She loved generously with words and action and to really know her was to know of her love for her Savior, His Word, and her love for you…and to love her in return. Survivors include her sons James Thomas, of Crockett, Kevin Thomas and wife Melody, of Katy, Randy Thomas and wife Amy, of Houston and Lamar Thomas and wife Stacy, of Keller; grandchildren Jennifer Jones, of Katy, Kolby Thomas, of New Waverly, Danielle Thomas, of Keller, Luke Thomas, of Houston, Faith Thomas, of Keller, Ben Thomas, of Houston, Callie Shugart and Samantha Coveney, both of Katy; great-grandchildren Ethan Jones and Aidan Jones, both of Katy; sisters Geraldine Young, of Houston, Doreen Poling, of Austin, Nina Ponfick, of Nursery and Lynn Tullos, of Richmond; brothers Ralph Felder, of Fort Worth and Mark Felder, of Houston; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. WILLIAM DANIEL JULIAN JR.

Former County Court at Law Judge and long time Houston County attorney, Mr. William Daniel Julian, Jr., passed away Thursday, June 16, 2011, three months shy of his 90th birthday. At the time of his death he was with his daughter, Betsy, in Dallas, but he was a permanent and life long resident of Crockett, Houston County Texas. Mr. Julian was the only son of Lois Millar Julian and William Daniel Julian, Sr. He was born in Denison, Texas on September 15, 1921, where his father, a graduate of the SMU School of Pharmacy, briefly worked prior to returning to his and his wife's native Houston County to raise their son and serve their community. Mr. Julian was a graduate of the 1939 class of Crockett High School. He attended Baylor University in Waco where he met the love of his life and his future wife, Madeline Drury Julian, who preceded him in death by 26 years. During his last year at Baylor Mr. Julian, along with a number of fellow classmates, graduated early to enlist to serve his country in WWII. Mr. Julian joined the U.S. Navy and left for Officer Candidate School Chicago, where he was commissioned. Just before shipping out he married his sweetheart, Madeline in Norfolk, Va., with only his mother and future mother in law in attendance from "home." Mr. Julian served in both the Europe and Pacific theaters. He participated in the D Day landing on Normandy beach as skipper of an LCT, and was awarded a Bronze Star. He was honorable discharged in 1945. After the war, the Julian's returned to Waco for Mr. Julian to attend law school. He was a member of the law school class which re-opened Baylor Law School after the war, and that close knit group remained lifelong friends. After law school, Mr. Julian returned to Crockett to practice law, and begin a long period of community activism and service. In March of 1948 just prior to graduation, their first child, Betsy, was born, followed by Dan III, born in Crockett in August of 1950. Earlier that year they had built their home on Redbud Lane (later Ave) which continued to be Mr. Julian's permanent residence until his death. As a young lawyer, he was an active member of the Jaycees which built the first public swimming pool in Crockett, at the Davy Crockett Memorial Park during the 1950s. Following in a long family tradition, he was a life-long member of the First Methodist Church, and served in many capacities in the church leadership, as well as serving as a teacher and mentor to young people in the Methodist Youth Fellowship during the 1960s. He was a life-long Democrat, and served for many years as the Chair of the Houston County Democratic Party, as well as participating in a number of local, state and national campaigns on behalf of progressive Democratic candidates. Mr. Julian was appointed the first County-Court-At-Law Judge for Houston County in 1975, where he was particularly interested in the using his position to help the youth of Houston County who came before him get back on the right track in their lives. From early on he and Madeline enjoyed traveling throughout Mexico, where they made many long term friends. During the last 7 years of their life together they also began making regular trips to England, often with their son Dan. After her death he lived for while in Mexico, studying Spanish and enjoying the people and culture of that wonderful country, as well as returning to England numerous times, sometimes joining Bruce Bennet and his son John for walking tours. He made his last trip to England when he was 80. Mr. Julian was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in late 2006, and spent the last five years of his life learning to deal with the loss of his ability to speak and write, which greatly frustrated him, being a smart man who enjoyed discussing and writing about ideas, politics, religion. However, he continued to read voraciously, and follow current affairs on CNN and other media outlets (Not FOX) until his last days. He was a great supporter of President Obama, and believed that he would prove to be one of our greatest presidents, but was strongly opposed to our military actions in the Middle East, having come to believe that war was an evil in which mankind could no longer afford to indulge. Mr. Julian's family roots in Houston County were deep, and many of his relatives made their mark on the community in which they lived and died. He was proud of that heritage and believed that he was truly blessed to be a part of it. Survivors include his daughter Betsy and husband Edward B. Cloutman, III, of Dallas; and grandson Edward B. Cloutman, IV and wife Hali Cloutman, of Dallas. Preceded in death by his wife Madeline Drury Julian; and son William Daniel Julian, III. ROBERT LEE BOSTICK

Mr. Robert Lee Bostick, age 85, departed this life to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 24, 2011 in Houston. Mr. Bostick was born February 14, 1926 in Rusk, Texas in Cherokee County. He met the love of his life, Hazel, through family and friends, and after a three-year courtship, they married in 1952 in Little Rock, Arkansas. They made their home there until he was drafted in 1954. Mr. Bostick proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1954 – 1956. Military service took him to San Juan Puerto Rico where he was stationed at Fort Buchanan. Hazel joined him for much of the time he was stationed there. Upon his discharge they returned to Little Rock and their daughter was born later that year. They moved to Houston in 1958 and made their home in this area where they lived the remainder of their lives. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of 37. He was an ordained deacon and faithfully served for many years. Even in his later years, He continued to live a life of service to others. He had the gift of connecting with people, always finding a common denominator for establishing a relationship and therefore never met a stranger. Mr. Bostick was a loving and devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He lived a life of integrity, never had an unkind word for anyone, and he was the quintessential family man that led by example and took pleasure in nurturing those he loved. Mr. Bostick retired from the United States Post Office in 1986. In his retirement years, he continued to do the things he enjoyed but just more of them. He loved to garden, and the yard was always full of plants and flowers. There was always a backyard vegetable garden and out of the abundance, he would give away more than he kept. His guitar was always close at hand and he would often entertain visitors and looked forward to the annual family reunion and playing with others on Saturday night. Mr. Bostick was interested in genealogy and had traced his family back to Scotland in the 1600s. He tracked down many individuals during his research and established relationships that endure today. He loved his family and routinely kept in touch with extended family members coast-to-coast. He was a voracious reader throughout his life. He enjoyed history, politics, and economics and loved to discuss ideas and was always ready for a good debate. His favorite book was the Bible which you would see him reading and meditating on each day. “Hear me as I pray, O Lord. Be merciful and answer me! My heart has heard you say, Come and talk with me. And my heart responds, Lord, I am coming.” Psalm 27:7-8 NLT Survivors include his daughter and husband Karen and Mike Duncan, of Katy; grandson Jarrod Black and wife Kari, of Houston; sister Nellie Bell; brother Harold Bostick and wife Laverne; and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family members.
